One person was hospitalized with major injuries after a two-vehicle collision near Lancaster on Thursday, October 1, according to the California Highway Patrol. Firefighters had to free one person from the wreckage, and the cause of the crash remains under investigation.
What Happened Near Lancaster
The collision happened at about 4:28 p.m. at the intersection of 110th Street East and East Avenue I, in unincorporated Los Angeles County east of Lancaster. One person was taken to Antelope Valley Hospital in Lancaster with major injuries. CHP has not released details about the vehicles involved or what led to the crash.
Many car accidents at rural intersections involve a driver who fails to stop, fails to yield, or misjudges the speed of cross traffic. Whether any of those factors played a role here will depend on the investigation.
How Fault Is Determined
CHP investigates crashes in unincorporated parts of the county. That includes East Los Angeles, where the CHP’s East Los Angeles Area office handles collisions on local streets and freeways.
The officer’s findings go into a police report, which insurers review early in the claim. But a report is only one piece of evidence. Fault is usually established with a combination of the following.
- The CHP traffic collision report and scene diagram
- Photographs of vehicle damage and final rest positions
- Event data recorder information from both vehicles
- Statements from witnesses and other drivers
- Medical records connecting the injuries to the crash
Responsibility is not always assigned to one driver. California’s shared fault rules allow an injured person to recover compensation even when they bear some blame, with the award reduced by their percentage of fault.
Serious Injuries and Insurance Limits
A crash that requires extrication usually involves heavy vehicle damage and significant force. Injuries in these collisions can include fractures, internal bleeding, spinal damage, and traumatic brain injuries.
Treatment for injuries this severe can quickly exceed the at-fault driver’s coverage. Under Senate Bill 1107, California’s minimum bodily injury liability coverage is $30,000 per person and $60,000 per accident. When those limits fall short, your own uninsured motorist coverage may help close the gap.
Insurance adjusters often contact injured people while they are still in the hospital. A recorded statement given at that stage can be used later to dispute fault or downplay injuries.
Protecting a Claim After a Serious Crash
Most injury claims in California must be filed within two years under Code of Civil Procedure Section 335.1. Waiting makes evidence harder to collect, especially vehicle data and witness information. An East Los Angeles, CA personal injury lawyer can obtain the CHP report, preserve evidence from both vehicles, and identify every available insurance policy.
